“Because every spirit needs a soundtrack.”
About WBRD
WBRD is the house radio of The Whirlybird — a little rascal frequency we cooked up in the pecan grove. It’s not polished, it’s not corporate, but it’s alive: stories, field reports, rants, music, and the occasional squeaky tambourine.
Think of it as Radio for the Restless Spirit — part porch talk, part bayou blues, part cosmic joke. Nicky Butler’s on the mic, Pop Squally’s grease is still poppin’, and the voices of Acadiana wander in and out as they please.
What You’ll Hear

WBRD Field Report #0001
Radio for the Restless Spirit
Two days wired to the metronome, watchin’ ceiling tiles turn into star maps. Wisdom showed up wearin’ Buddha’s robe—then slipped it off, and there was Pop Squally, smilin’ like he knew the punchline already.
The ones in white moved like a midnight band—every note a kindness, every pause a mercy. Rhythm steadied me when words ran out.
So here’s what I came back with: some names don’t matter half as much as the beat that carries us. And sometimes gratitude don’t talk—it hums. And when it hums, you get up, you get movin’, you get it done.

️ WBRD Field Report #0002: Focus in the Fog of Uncertainty
Radio for the Restless Spirit
With all the troubles in the world, seems like we’re all searchin’ for the same two things: strategies for survival and paths of action. How to deal. How to move. How to keep steady when the ground won’t quit shakin’.
It is time for reflection—
Wait. Truth is, it’s always time for reflection.
And right now, WBRD is reflectin’ like a mofo…
Science’ll tell you plain—the more you try to pin somethin’ down, the slipperier it gets. They call it the uncertainty principle: you can know where a thing is, or how fast it’s movin’—but not both at the same time. Ain’t that just like life? Try to hold it too tight, and it wriggles out your hand.
So here I am, thinkin’ on that notion of creating focus while celebratin’ blurred lines. Maybe the blur is the truth—the jitter, the shimmer, the not-knowing. Focus is just choosin’ which piece of the fog you’ll lean into, which outline you’ll let take shape, knowin’ the rest is always shiftin’.
And in the middle of that thought I catch myself: oh yes, I’m standin’ here in The Whirlybird. Again, look’n at Chenier’s Blacksnake Blues wall, it’s lookin’ sharp one second, hazy the next, like it’s breathin’ with me. Again, that memory of the JESUS SAVES steeple in Oakland buzzes like neon honey in the mouth—sweet, bitter, metallic all at once. Now the floor beneath me feels uncertain, givin’ just enough sway to remind me balance ain’t about fixin’ in place—it’s about ridin’ the tremble.
So I let the paradox settle: focus because it’s blurry, certainty because it wobbles. That’s where the wow lives, right on the edge between knowin’ and not.
—Nicky Butler, laughin’ soft in the Bird’s half-light.
