Christy Leichty and Jim Phillips, a couple of artists and educators, have a deep love for Cajun and Creole music and culture. This passion led them to move to Louisiana after the 2005 hurricanes to help with rebuilding efforts and work in education. They transformed an old Texaco distribution center into a secret dance hall and theater called The Whirlybird. It has since become a popular venue for renowned names in Cajun music and beyond to come together and enjoy a good time. In years since, they have opened the Whirlybird Gallery and Artist in Residency Program.
